U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that Israel has agreed to a 10-day ceasefire following more than a month of fighting with Hezbollah and an expanded ground offensive in southern Lebanon.
The ceasefire is set to take effect at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time (midnight between Thursday and Friday in Lebanon), Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.
“I just had excellent conversations with the highly respected President Joseph Aoun of Lebanon, and Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu of Israel,” Trump wrote. “These two leaders have agreed that, in order to achieve peace between their countries, they will formally begin a 10-day ceasefire at 5 p.m. EST.”
Trump also highlighted recent diplomatic efforts in Washington, noting that Israeli and Lebanese representatives met earlier this week for the first time in 34 years.
“On Tuesday, the two countries met for the first time in 34 years here in Washington, D.C., with our great Secretary of State Marco Rubio,” he said.
He added that he had tasked senior U.S. officials with advancing efforts toward a broader and more durable resolution.
“I have directed Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, together with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Dan Caine, to work with Israel and Lebanon to achieve a lasting peace,” Trump said.
Framing the initiative as part of a wider diplomatic push, Trump suggested the ceasefire could mark a step toward ending the conflict altogether.
“It has been my honor to solve nine wars across the world, and this will be my tenth,” he said. “So let’s get it done.”
Shortly after announcing the ceasefire, Trump said he plans to invite Netanyahu and Aoun to the White House for what he described as “the first meaningful talks between Israel and Lebanon since 1983.”
“Both sides want to see peace, and I believe that will happen quickly,” Trump said.
Speaking to reporters later outside the White House, Trump said he is hopeful the meeting will pave the way toward an agreement between Israel and Lebanon, building on the 10-day ceasefire expected to take effect within hours.
He added that the Lebanese government would “take care of Hezbollah.”
Describing the truce he announced earlier, Trump called it “a very nice little package for about a week,” saying it would reduce hostilities and open the door to potential peace efforts between Lebanon and Israel.
Asked what would make this initiative different from previous attempts to secure peace between the two sides, Trump replied: “Me. I’m the difference.”
