Kataeb MP Salim Sayegh has issued a strong appeal for the immediate reactivation of the Rene Mouawad Airport and the Port of Jounieh, describing them as crucial lifelines for the country during times of war and beacons of hope in times of deprivation.
In a statement posted on his X account, Sayegh called for a historic decision that would place these vital facilities under the sole authority of the Lebanese Army, similar to the current status of Hamat Airport.
The lawmaker questioned whether the Minister of Public Works, Ali Hamieh, would take the necessary steps to open these facilities and whether Prime Minister Najib Mikati would support such a move.
"Will Minister Hamieh make the decision to open the airport and the port? Will Prime Minister Mikati do it?" Sayegh asked. "If they hesitate or refuse to do so, what are the alternatives?"
Sayegh highlighted the operational capacity of neighboring countries as a point of comparison, noting that Cyprus has six operational airports, while Syria has 36.
These facilities, he pointed out, are essential in meeting the needs of their respective nations.
Concluding his statement, Sayegh warned that the Lebanese people would not tolerate being held hostage by the ongoing idleness, signaling the growing frustration among citizens over the lack of access to essential infrastructure.
