Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz on Friday sharply rebuked Lebanese President Joseph Aoun for condemning Israeli airstrikes on Beirut’s southern Dahiyeh suburb, warning that Israel would not tolerate threats from Hezbollah and demanding immediate action from the Lebanese government.
“There will be no peace in Beirut and no order and stability in Lebanon without security for Israel,” Katz said in a statement. “Agreements must be respected, and if you don't do what's required, we will continue to act with great force.”
The remarks came after President Aoun denounced the Israeli strikes on the Hezbollah stronghold of Dahiyeh Thursday evening, calling them a violation of Lebanese sovereignty and international law.
Katz, however, defended Israel’s actions as a necessary response to what he described as mounting security threats from the Iran-backed militant group.
“The Lebanese government must disarm Hezbollah and not allow them to produce UAVs that threaten northern settlements and Israeli citizens,” he said.
