Sayegh: Lebanon Faces a Humanitarian Crisis Rather Than Political One

Kataeb Lawmaker Selim Sayegh on Wednesday claimed that the Iranian oil could only be smuggled into Lebanon through Syrian borders just as Hezbollah did in bringing fuel oil ships last winter.

"If an exception is not granted, Iranian ships are not permitted to dock on Lebanese shores; otherwise, the Lebanese government will be held accountable," Sayegh pointed out in a statement to Asharq al-Awsat.

"The Lebanese people cannot be subjected to collective punishment, and the government must engage in negotiations with the Americans and Arab nations to find alternatives to Iranian gasoline or make an exemption," he said considering that Lebanon was facing a humanitarian crisis rather than a political one.

“To avoid punishing the entire Lebanese people, the State must utilize the Iranian gasoline issue as a leverage point with the international community as we are on the verge of total collapse,” he added.

Sayegh came to the conclusion that although the Americans were punishing Hezbollah, the Lebanese citizens who had been taken prisoner by the party were in grave danger.
