Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on Saturday warned of the risks of renewed military operations along Lebanon's southern border, cautioning that such developments could drag the country into another devastating war.
In a statement made in the wake of rocket fire from Lebanon, Salam highlighted the dangers posed by escalating tensions, saying any new conflict would "bring calamities upon Lebanon and the Lebanese people."
The prime minister held talks with Defense Minister Michel Menassa, stressing the need to take "all necessary security and military measures" to ensure that "the state alone holds the decision of war and peace."
Salam also contacted Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, urging the international body to ramp up pressure on Israel for a full withdrawal from occupied Lebanese territories.
He underscored that Israel's continued presence in these areas constitutes "a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701," which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, and breaches the ceasefire agreement adopted by Lebanon's previous government last October.
"Lebanon remains committed to these arrangements," Salam asserted, reiterating the need for diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.
