Salam Rules Out Any Extension of Parliament’s Mandate, Confirms Elections on Time

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam reaffirmed on Thursday that Lebanon’s upcoming parliamentary elections will be held on schedule in the spring of 2026, stressing that the government will not seek to extend Parliament’s mandate under any circumstance.

Speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat, Salam said the government “respects the constitutional deadlines required to complete the formation of state institutions,” emphasizing that “there is no room for delaying the parliamentary elections.”

“We are not in a position to propose any bill that would extend the term of Parliament,” he said. “What has been decided on this matter is final and cannot be reversed. The Interior Ministry is already proceeding with logistical and administrative preparations to complete the process, and I do not believe there is any obstacle preventing the elections from being held on time.”

Salam also underscored that preparations by the Interior Ministry are already underway to ensure the elections proceed smoothly. These include logistical planning, coordination with local authorities, and updating the electoral rolls, according to government sources.

“The elections are a constitutional and democratic milestone that cannot be compromised,” Salam said, reaffirming that his government intends to carry out the process “within the deadlines set by law.”
