Salam Orders Crackdown on Non-Compliant Private Power Generators

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has ordered ministries and public administrations to move swiftly against private power generator owners who fail to meet legal, technical and environmental requirements, warning that violators risk prosecution and confiscation of their equipment.

In a circular issued on Thursday, Salam instructed all relevant bodies to take “all necessary legal measures” to ensure full compliance with existing laws, government decisions and official directives regulating the sector.

In a post on X, Salam cited the widespread use of generators in cities and residential neighborhoods without adherence to technical specifications designed to reduce pollution and environmental damage. Such practices, he said, posed “serious health and environmental risks” due to harmful emissions.

The prime minister said he had held talks with the ministers of energy, economy, interior, justice, and environment to explore solutions to the problem.

Based on those discussions, Salam said the government would focus on two main measures. First, authorities will verify that all generator owners follow the tariffs set by the Ministry of Energy, install approved electronic meters and filters, submit the necessary permits, and meet environmental standards.

Second, owners will be given a grace period of 45 days to bring their operations into compliance. After that, non-compliant operators will face legal action, including fines, the confiscation of generators “when necessary,” and referral to the judiciary.
