Richa Says the 40th Anniversary of Bachir Gemayel’s Martyrdom Is Being Honored: Final Preparations

The Kataeb party on Wednesday prepares to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the martyrdom of President Bachir Gemayel and his comrades, in a central ceremony in Sassine Square in Achrafieh at 6:00 PM.

Unlike in recent years, when Bachir's family commemorated his martyrdom at a mass in Bikfaya, the Kataeb party opted to mark the 40th anniversary with a focal celebration and a significant public presence as per the size of Sassine Square and the significance of the fortieth commemoration.

The head of the Kataeb party media department, Patrick Richa, revealed the details of the celebration.

“The event will start with an emotional distinctive greeting, followed by silence to honor the 24 martyrs who perished alongside the martyred president, and then a prayer for their souls,” Richa said in an interview with MTV.

He also announced that videos about Bachir Gemayel would be shown for the first time.

“Two statements will be made during the ceremony, the first by lawmaker Nadim Gemayel and the second by Leader of Kataeb party Samy Gemayel,” he noted.

"President Michel Aoun's term is set to end in a few weeks, and the constitutionally mandated time for choosing a new president is quickly approaching. Consequently, this is likely to be the direction of the Kataeb leader's speech," he explained when asked about Gemayel’s upcoming discourse.

“Kataeb leader Samy Gemayel will reiterate his call for cooperation with opposition figures to agree on the name of a candidate for the presidency of the Republic,” he stated.

Richa pointed out that Gemayel would draw comparisons between the time of Bachir and the time of today, between the time of the past invaders and the invaders of today as well as the occupations that Lebanon was currently experiencing.
