U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing to visit Saudi Arabia in mid-May, marking his first foreign trip since returning to the White House, two U.S. officials and a source familiar with the plans told Axios.
Trump first hinted at the trip during a March 6 exchange with reporters in the Oval Office.
"I am going to Saudi Arabia. Normally, you would go to the UK first. Last time I went to Saudi Arabia. They put up 450 billion dollars," he said. "This time I said I will go if you put up a trillion dollars to American companies—meaning the purchase over four years of a trillion dollars. They agreed to do that. So I am gonna be going there."
Senior U.S. officials and their Saudi counterparts have been discussing the trip for weeks, including during recent talks in Saudi Arabia on the war in Ukraine. A source familiar with the planning said that an April 28 date was initially considered but later postponed.
A U.S. official confirmed that mid-May is now the target timeframe for the visit.
"An opportunity for international travel for the President is something that is being looked at. We don't yet have a specific plan, and we will provide that information when it is official," a White House official said.
Talks during the visit are expected to center on foreign investments, strengthening ties with Gulf nations, and efforts to resolve conflicts in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia has also been playing an active role in U.S.-led efforts to mediate a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, and a source with knowledge of the planned visit said Riyadh wants the trip to take place after progress is made on that front.
