Israel would withdraw its military forces from southern Lebanon as part of a new proposed ceasefire agreement, according to a report by Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom. The ceasefire deal, which includes U.S. and Russian security assurances, is intended to curb Hezbollah’s influence in the border region, potentially marking a significant step in de-escalating hostilities.
A core element of the agreement is Hezbollah's withdrawal from positions near the Israeli border to areas north of the Litani River. This condition is aimed at reducing Hezbollah's direct presence along the Lebanese-Israeli frontier, a focal point of past conflicts between the two sides.
In addition to the redeployment of Hezbollah forces, the Lebanese Army will be entrusted with dismantling remaining Hezbollah infrastructure along the border. This measure intends to prevent the group from regaining a foothold near Israeli territory and signals a shift in responsibility for border security to the Lebanese state.
Syria has also been included in the terms of the deal, with Damascus expected to prevent the transfer of weapons from its territory into Lebanon.
Israel will retain the right to take action against any future violations or security threats emanating from Lebanon. This provision, as reported, allows Israel to respond swiftly to any perceived breaches of the ceasefire terms or other security risks along its northern border.
Underpinning the ceasefire deal are U.S. and Russian commitments to prevent Hezbollah from rearming, a key Israeli demand aimed at maintaining the group’s reduced military capacity.
