Kataeb Party political bureau member Joelle Bou Abboud expressed concerns over Iran’s aggressive stance amidst escalating tensions and fears of a full-scale war in Lebanon, criticizing Iranian Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri for speaking on behalf of countries other than his own.
“We do not want Lebanon to live in hell. If Iran wants to fight Israel, then it should do so itself without dragging Lebanon into a war,” Bou Abboud said in an interview on Voice of Lebanon radio station on Friday.
Bou Abboud slammed Hezbollah for unilaterally deciding to wage a military confrontation in southern Lebanon to serve Iran’s regional agenda, blaming the group for entangling Lebanon in what could become a full-scale, devastating war.
"The problem with Iran’s axis is that it is more concerned with measuring Israel's losses without considering the devastating losses Lebanon would incur," Bou Aboud added. "The destruction and losses in Gaza exceed those incurred by Israel, and the same applies to Lebanon. The southern areas have been completely destroyed, lands burned, people killed or injured, and others displaced.”
Bou Abboud lamented the international community’s lenient approach to Hezbollah, saying that it is reflected internally, where the group deals with other Lebanese with arrogance and labels opponents as traitors and agents.
"Hezbollah believes it has the right to drag the Lebanese into war, establish its own economic system, abide by an external authority, disrupt elections, and undermine the Constitution. This situation cannot continue as it," she asserted.
"It is unacceptable for months of war to pass without a parliamentary or ministerial meeting to discuss this issue and set an emergency plan. This reflects the extent of submission to Hezbollah and Iran's will.”
Bou Abboud stressed that the Kataeb party is in constant communication with the international community, noting, however, that the latter prefers to adopt 'political realism,' meaning it is compelled to communicate and deal with Hezbollah.
The Kataeb politburo member urged the international community to pressure Hezbollah to adhere to the Constitution and reintegrate into the Lebanese State like other local factions.
Bou Abboud argued that the absence of a President is a fundamental reason why these countries do not officially negotiate with the Lebanese State.
“This suits Hezbollah as it positions it as the primary and sole negotiator, with no president to take on this role,” she said. "There is no foreign policy in Lebanon; rather, Hezbollah positions itself as the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and threatens neighboring countries like Cyprus.”
"With no President, Lebanon will be officially and significantly absent from any settlements or negotiations," Bou Abboud warned.
She noted that Hezbollah will continue to obstruct the presidential election, even if Marada chief Suleiman Frangieh withdraws its candidacy, because it wants to control the presidency for various reasons.
It will not accept a President elected through democratic and constitutional means without guaranteeing the outcome of such a vote," Bou Abboud stressed.
