Army Launches Major Security Operation in Baalbek’s Sharawneh Neighborhood

The Lebanese Army launched a major security operation early Wednesday in the Sharawneh neighborhood of Baalbek, sealing off the area as part of its ongoing campaign to apprehend high-risk fugitives in the country's lawless eastern regions.

Military units deployed surveillance and armed drones to carry out precision strikes targeting the residence of Ali Monzer Zeaiter, widely known by his alias “Abou Salleh,” a top fugitive long wanted by authorities. At least seven missiles were fired at his home during the raid.

Citing security sources, Al-Hadath reported that Zeaiter was killed in the drone strike.

Separately, the Annahar daily reported that another high-profile suspect, Abbas Ali Saadoun Zeaiter, was killed alongside an unidentified individual amid the broader security sweep.

Shortly after the strikes, gunmen believed to be linked to wanted individuals launched a retaliatory attack on a Lebanese Army outpost in the Wadi Fissan area of Hermel. However, conflicting reports soon emerged as the National News Agency’s correspondent in Hermel denied reports circulating on social media and in some local outlets about an attack on a military facility, calling the claims "completely unfounded."

The operation is part of an intensified crackdown by the Lebanese Armed Forces targeting criminal networks and armed fugitives operating with near-impunity in parts of the Bekaa Valley. The region has long been a stronghold for organized crime, smuggling, and drug trafficking.

Gunfire was heard throughout the day in Sharawneh, with residents reporting mounting tensions and a heavy military presence. As of Wednesday evening, the army had not issued an official statement confirming casualties, arrests, or the full outcome of the operation.
