Nadim Gemayel Urges End to Foreign Conflicts on Lebanese Soil

In an interview with "Al-Hadath", Kataeb Lawmaker Nadim Gemayel commended the efforts made at the Paris Conference, which resulted in $1 billion in aid for Lebanon, expressing gratitude to French President Emmanuel Macron for his support.

Commenting on House Speaker Nabih Berri's remarks on implementing UNSC Resolution 1701, Gemayel said: "I have said before and reiterate that the issue is not merely the implementation of UNSC Resolution 1701 or not. Berri is hiding behind figures to avoid addressing the resolution’s core, and we demand a clear stance on the weapons issue, along with pressure on Iran to halt its military support to Hezbollah. All these issues must be on the table."

He added, "We must move towards a new phase of enforcing Resolutions 1701 and 1559, involving the handover of illegal weapons. It is concerning that Israel is uncovering tunnels and arms; it would be far better if Hezbollah handed over its illegal weapons to the Lebanese State."

"We seek to implement the constitution and the Taif Agreement to ensure equality among all Lebanese. I refuse a reality where one group is armed while others are not; we cannot continue with double standards under one roof," he indicated.

He noted that Iran views Hezbollah as its frontline defense, benefitting from weaponry it refuses to relinquish under the pretext of the Shebaa Farms and Kfar Shuba Hills.

"This issue should be resolved with Syria. Additionally, Hezbollah has accumulated 150,000 missiles and 100,000 fighters to establish leverage domestically, using its arsenal within Lebanon, as seen on May 7 and with the 'black shirts'—and at every critical juncture, Hezbollah threatens us with its illegal weapons. We can no longer tolerate weapons exerting influence on Lebanon’s internal affairs," the Kataeb Lawmaker asserted.

He added, "We commend the stance of caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, which is a positive step forward. We must restrict weapons solely to the Lebanese army."

He said, "I have appealed to Macron and all participants in Paris to demand Hezbollah's disarmament. Strengthening the army is impossible with the presence of illegal weapons. Lebanon's issue must also be isolated from regional conflicts."

He called on politicians and party leaders to "address matters frankly."

Commenting on Free Patriotic Movement Leader Gebran Bassil position, he stated, "We've grown accustomed to his transactional stance. On October 13, he defended the resistance axis, the 'unity of arenas,' and Iran's dominance over the country. The problem is his deep-rooted alignment with the axis that brought him and his uncle to power, enabling his bloc to engage in decades of corruption due to his alliance with Hezbollah and involvement in minority coalitions."

He emphasized the need to exit the resistance axis, saying, "Lebanon should realign with its natural surroundings—a message of freedom, safety, and peace, not the axis Bassil has defended for the past 20 years."

On the presidential elections, he stated, "Before understanding the army chief's stance on all key issues, it’s premature to discuss supporting him for the presidency."

He added, "The next president must align with the new era, marked by a political stance and a vision for building a peaceful future for our children, one that mirrors the lives enjoyed by Saudis and Egyptians."

Gemayel affirmed that it is time to end all conflicts on our soil and live harmoniously with our regional neighbors.
