Lebanese President Joseph Aoun held a phone call with businessman Elon Musk on Thursday to discuss potential cooperation in Lebanon’s telecommunications and internet sectors, according to a statement released by the presidency.
The call, initiated by Musk, marked a significant step in efforts to explore the entry of the tech magnate’s companies, particularly satellite internet provider Starlink, into Lebanon, a country still plagued by some of the slowest internet speeds in the world.
Starlink, operated by Musk’s SpaceX, delivers satellite-based internet via a network of low-Earth orbit satellites and currently serves about five million users across 125 countries. The company has rapidly expanded across the Middle East, recently going live in Jordan and Oman after securing regulatory approvals.
“Musk expressed his deep interest in Lebanon and its telecommunications and internet sectors,” the statement said, adding that the founder of SpaceX conveyed a desire for his companies to establish a presence in the country.
President Aoun welcomed Musk’s interest and pledged to offer “all possible facilitation within the framework of Lebanese laws.” He also invited the American billionaire to visit Beirut.
Last month, President Aoun and Telecommunications Minister Charles Hajj hosted Sam Turner, Starlink’s Global Director of Licensing and Development, in Beirut. During the May 29 meeting, Turner reportedly discussed the integration of Lebanon into the Starlink network.
