In the wake of the recent unrest and roadblocks near Beirut’s Rafik Hariri International Airport, MP Salim Sayegh has reiterated his call for the establishment of additional airports in Lebanon, citing security concerns and the need for balanced development across the country.
In a post on X, Sayegh recalled the letter he submitted to the previous government on August 21, 2024, demanding the establishment of other airports. However, he said his calls were met with accusations of promoting division.
"At the time, some members of the former government accused us of advocating partition simply because we called for new airports. They are gone now while we are still here, holding onto fair and just demands," he wrote.
The Kataeb lawmaker stressed that opening new airports in Qlayaat and Hamat does not mean abandoning Beirut’s main airport or leaving it and Lebanese travelers hostages.
"Before, during, and after the recent war, we have been working towards Lebanon’s political and developmental liberation," he stated.
Sayegh urged the new government to include a comprehensive transportation strategy in its ministerial statement, covering air, land, and sea routes, with a clear reference to the necessity of additional airports to ensure security and accessibility across the country.
