Marouni Fears Comprehensive Obstruction Plan

Kataeb Leader Advisor Elie Marouni expressed his dismay at the reliance on grateful ambassadors to roam and persuade political rivals to elect a president, portraying the country as corrupt and failed.

He considered it shameful that while some deputies were dedicated to electing a president, others awaited orders from their external references to attend parliament.

"I believe the Quintet committee has become desperate as it spins in circles, hearing from the objectors that they either want Frangieh or no one else, encountering a deadlock in the presidential file with no sign of a solution or election of a president in sight, quite the opposite," Marouni said in an interview with Voice of Lebanon.

Marouni also suggested that initiating dialogue might be a ploy to pave the way for Frangieh's election, stating, "How can House Speaker Nabih Berri call for conditional dialogue while we are open to any president who carries the file of sovereignty, independence, and dignity but rejects Frangieh's political approach, which does not align with the opposition."

He deemed previous dialogue experiences a failure, indicating that parliament is the natural venue for dialogue.

"The constitution stipulates that parliament must convene continuously, and we want the constitution to be applied. Just as Berri secured the quorum for extending the term of municipalities, he must ensure the quorum for the presidential election sessions. We cannot elect a president whose policies resemble those of President Michel Aoun, which would lead to further collapse," he emphasized.

He believed that the problem lay in Frangieh's political stance, not his personality, emphasizing that "they could not accept a president who would lead the country to sanctions and solutions that appease Syria, Iran, and Hezbollah."

Marouni stressed the necessity of electing a president who could engage with everyone, unify factions, and not be against any other team.

He highlighted that there were capable figures capable of unifying and improving the country's situation and that as the opposition, they would not surrender or submit blindly.

"We, as the Kataeb Party, will not participate in a dialogue that would result in an unacceptable president," he stated.

"The opposition cannot surrender its fate to a dialogue table that produces a rejected president," reminding that in many previous dialogue sessions, the aim was to present a defensive strategy, but Hezbollah never accepted any solution except its own opinion.

Concerning the Syrian refugee crisis, Marouni emphasized that the UN's decision to support refugees cannot be addressed without unity.

"Today, everyone talks about addressing the Syrian refugee crisis, but there are no practical solutions, and the Syrian presence has become unbearable. We need a unified stance at least from the opposition. Should we wait for the Amal Movement and Hezbollah to deport the Syrians, especially when there are rivals interested in security chaos?" he asked.

"The solution must be based at the political, and security levels, all starting with the election of a president," Marouni affirmed.

Regarding the extension of municipalities' term, Marouni noted that 40% of municipalities are non-existent, and thus, municipalities are the local administration that protects citizens and meets their needs.

"It's time to pity the country. Elections can be held, but I fear a comprehensive and complete obstruction plan for all state institutions. Many have their projects, and some demand a tripartite division and changing the system, which might be justified, but not by dominating the deputies and the people," Marouni concluded.
