Maronite Patriarch Bechara al-Rahi met with Justice Minister Adel Nassar on Friday in Bkirki to discuss the current situation in Lebanon.
During the meeting, al-Rahi expressed hope for positive developments, emphasizing that the government enjoys strong popular and international support, which could serve as a key factor for progress.
After the talks, Nassar highlighted the importance of judicial independence and the upcoming judicial appointments, which will be based on competence, integrity, and independence. He noted that he had briefed the Patriarch on the ministry’s efforts in these areas.
The Minister emphasized that reform in Lebanon requires the implementation of the ministerial statement, particularly regarding the state's control over weapons. He described this as the only path to reform, stating that no state can be built without asserting full state authority and sovereignty. Nassar also stressed the need to establish a timeline for this process through a Lebanese decision, urging all parties to commit to building the state.
Regarding the Beirut Port explosion investigation, the Minister clarified that he has no authority to intervene in the judiciary's work. He stressed that all relevant information should be provided to the investigating judge and that the probe must proceed without obstruction. The final decision on the matter, he said, rests with the lead investigator.
