Maronite Patriarch Calls for Army Commander Term Extension Amid Ongoing Conflict

Maronite Patriarch Bechara Al-Rahi highlighted the urgency of stabilizing Lebanon's internal governance amid the intensifying regional crisis and the ongoing presidential vacuum, calling for “the utmost necessity” of extending the term of Lebanon’s army commander. Al-Rahi emphasized that extending the army commander’s mandate is vital for maintaining stability in Lebanon, particularly as the conflict widens in the country.

In his Sunday sermon, the patriarch also addressed the ongoing internal displacement crisis, calling on the Minister of Education to identify better accommodations for the influx of displaced persons. Al-Rai joined parliamentarians in urging UNESCO to protect Lebanon’s archaeological heritage, calling on the organization to safeguard key historical sites from potential damage due to the ongoing conflict.

The patriarch extended his congratulations to the United States on the election of its new president, expressing hopes that the leader’s international influence could contribute to securing a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. Al-Rai also urged the U.S. administration to assist in facilitating Lebanon's long-delayed presidential election, which he said is crucial to restoring the country’s State institutions.
