French President Emmanuel Macron, who continues to closely monitor the situation in Lebanon, is considering a visit to the country and is contemplating the best time to do so, whether at the end of the year or at another time.
He is also considering reinforcing the French contingent in "UNIFIL" in the south by increasing their number to about 1,000 soldiers, up from the current 750. Previously, the French force numbered 1,000 soldiers, with improved equipment, ensuring better readiness for intervention in villages and equipped with advanced electronic means to enable "UNIFIL" teams to identify the source of shelling.
"Annahar" correspondent in Paris, Randa Taqi al-Din, reported that President Macron is currently discussing the topic with the French Chief of Staff, General Lecointre, and may announce this in the coming weeks.
According to President Macron, strengthening the French contingent will enhance the credibility of "UNIFIL," especially considering the possibility of an Israeli attack on Lebanon. It would become harder for Israel to maneuver if the force is reinforced, with the ability to identify the points of shelling origin, allowing "UNIFIL" to establish a different balance of power with Hezbollah in terms of responsibilities.
However, according to French circles, Macron believes there is still a possibility to avoid the worst in Lebanon. France does not intend to change "UNIFIL"'s mission, which the source describes as a solid mission according to its deployment resolution.
In the south, it was not an ordinary military development for Israel to start targeting high-risk Hezbollah targets, such as ammunition, missile, and weapons depots for the first time since last October 8th, as happened in Adloun. Consequently, the increased risk of Lebanon slipping into a full-scale war is no longer just an early warning.
Military experts and diplomatic observers monitoring the field developments have converged in their assessments towards the red line, indicating that the situation is nearing a significant explosion, linked to the recent escalatory violence resorted to by Israel, the nature of targets chosen in its raids and attacks on the south, and the frequency of assassinations of Hezbollah field cadres and leaders, making the assessments of Lebanon's likelihood of sliding into a comprehensive war extremely serious.
