Gemayel Deems Decentralization as the Backbone of Lebanon

Kataeb leader Samy Gemayel on Friday stressed the importance of decentralization starting with the municipalities up to the local councils, which need excessive attention from the Lebanese state.

“Our first concern is decentralization, starting with the municipalities up to the local councils, which need excessive attention from the Lebanese state,” Gemayel said during a workshop entitled "Reality of Municipal Work and Prospects for Its Development".

“We hope that the vote will happen as soon as possible on the law proposal that we presented regarding decentralization; in light of the state’s failure and continuous disruption, it becomes clear how much the adoption of administrative decentralization is an absolute necessity,” he added.

Gemayel explained that the decentralization requires that each district have an elected local council and a public authority with oversight and accountability over a board of directors elected by it, headed by the head of the board of directors.

“Decentralization is the backbone of Lebanon for a stable state that respects people, and our task will be, once the elections are over, to put this project on the agenda of the General Assembly for approval because discussion ended with the approval of all, and work was done on accurate and correct decentralization in accordance with scientific and legal standards,” he noted.

"What the municipalities are going through today is the worst that can happen, and we have no choice but to resist to the status quo. We seek developed , modern and productive municipalities that preserve the privacy of the town and depend on absolute transparency and seek the interest of the town and its residents," he concluded.
