Former President Gemayel Deems Patriarch Remarks as a Compass

Former President Amine Gemayel on Tuesday deemed the remarks made by Maronite Patriarch Bechara al-Rahi as a compass that indicates Lebanon’s path to salvation, saying that such remarks confirm the fundamentals on which the country was built.

“The speech of army commander Jospeh Aoun complete with the remarks of the Maronite Patriarch,” Gemayel said following meeting with Al-Rahi in Bkirki, deeming it as a cry of conscience.

“We are on his side in protecting the national unity,” he added.

“We are aware of the role Aoun is exerting so as to preserve the entity and his fear over the army. I hope that officials would learn from the dangerous speech the army commander has made,” he pointed out.

Gemayel warned against those who think that with the army’s absence chaos will prevail, saying that everyone knows its consequences.

“The international conference demanded by the Patriarch doesn’t mean a new tutelage over Lebanon,” he noted.
