Kataeb MP Elias Hankache on Tuesday renewed his rejection over expanding the Metn waste landfill especially following the environmental damage and health impact on the residents of the area, calling for a rapid environmental emergency plan that would ensure the citizens' health and well-being.
“Garbage must be kept away from the Metn citizens and the groundwater," Hankache told Al-Joumhouria newspaper.
“We are against dumping waste in the Costa Brava or in any other region; the goal today is not political contradiction with anyone but a final solution to the garbage crisis,” he said.
Hankache offered to move the garbage to border areas with Syria, saying that despite its high transport cost it remains a better solution than damaging the health of the Metn citizens.
“Legislation and necessary decrees need to be issued to ease the waste by setting fees on the plastic material and oblige the mechanical and electronic waste agents to recover it,” he added.
