UN Chief Demands Lebanon to Disarm Hezbollah

United nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres voiced concern over Hezbollah’s growing arsenal, calling on the Lebanese government and the Army to take action to prevent the group from acquiring more arms and to turn it into a civil political party.

In his semi-annual report on the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1559, Guterres reiterated that Hezbollah's involvement in the Syrian war goes against Lebanon's dissociation policy, demanding President Michel Aoun to set out a defense strategy according to which the Lebanese state would be the only armed authority in the country.

Diplomats at the Security Council told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that the United States was not pleased with the latest UN Secretary-General report on the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701 as well as Hezbollah’s abidance by the arms embargo, as prepared by UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jan Kubis.
