As the 60-day ceasefire deadline between Lebanon and Israel nears its end, mounting pressure is building for an extension of the truce before the return of elected President Donald Trump to the White House.
Israel's Channel 12 has reported that Trump is keen on seeing the continuation of the ceasefire in Lebanon, with sources close to the upcoming U.S. administration emphasizing Trump's focus on peace in the Middle East, which would allow him to turn his attention to domestic issues.
Trump’s aides conveyed a message to Israel urging them to avoid provoking unnecessary conflicts, signaling the president’s desire to prevent further hostilities.
"We expect peace between Lebanon and Israel, and Trump has no intention of being drawn into another war during his early days in office," the report quoted one of Trump's aides as saying.
The situation has drawn attention from other key players, with the Iranian Foreign Ministry stating that both France and the United States, as guarantor nations, are responsible for ensuring that the ceasefire agreement remains intact. Iran accused Israel of violating the ceasefire hundreds of times without honoring its commitments.
