MP Elias Hankache on Wednesday condemned the blatant recklessness over the waste management crisis in Lebanon, sounding the alarm over the safety hazards that this environmental emergency is posing.
Hankache's statement came one day after a Middle East Airlines plane had collided with birds while en route from Beirut to Abu Dhabi. Environmentalists repeatedly warned that the Costa Brava landfill, located near the Beirut airport, poses a danger to airplanes given that it attracts birds.
“Until when will this garbage crisis continue to haunt us? Until when will the government force us to choose between what’s bad and what’s worse, that is between expanding landfills or having the garbage piled up on the streets?” Hankache asked during the Parliament session.
The Kataeb lawmaker also blasted plans to establish incinerators which would exacerbate pollution, warning that this option would entail a major environmental and health "crime" to be added to the ordeals already afflicting the country.
