Lebanon’s Top Officials Confer Amid Divergent Approaches to Israel Talks

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam met with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri at Ain al-Tineh on Wednesday to discuss President Joseph Aoun’s initiative on Israel-Lebanon negotiations and the country’s broader security situation.

The meeting follows an earlier visit to Berri by President Aoun’s adviser, André Rahal. According to Lebanese outlet Al-Modon, Rahal’s discussions with Berri centered on several proposals from President Aoun, including direct talks with Israel, Hezbollah’s disarmament, full deployment of the Lebanese army across the country, and efforts to develop a unified Lebanese stance aimed at halting the war.

Sources described the meeting’s atmosphere as “cordial,” noting that Berri remains firm in his position, calling for the reactivation of the existing mechanism committee and a full return to the terms of the November 2024 ceasefire agreement.

Salam’s discussion with Berri reportedly covered the same proposals, as the Prime Minister and Parliament Speaker sought to align on the agenda for Thursday’s Cabinet session, which is expected to address Lebanon’s strategy in response to Israel’s ongoing military operations.
