President Joseph Aoun met Monday with a U.S. delegation led by Senator Angus King, highlighting Lebanon's efforts to address the long-standing issue of armed Palestinian factions within the camps, signaling a significant step toward disarmament and enhanced security.
Aoun told the U.S. delegation that Lebanese-Palestinian committees have been formed and are set to begin work by mid-next month in three Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut.
The Lebanese president praised Washington’s decision to lift sanctions on Syria as a crucial step toward regional stability and easing Lebanon’s ongoing displacement crisis.
Calling the sanction relief “a positive development,” Aoun emphasized that a stronger Syrian economy would encourage displaced Syrians currently living in Lebanon to return home.
“They should go back and help rebuild their country’s economy,” he said, highlighting the potential benefits for both Syria and Lebanon.
Aoun further stressed the importance of redirecting international aid to assist displaced Syrians within their own country rather than in Lebanon, urging the United Nations to prioritize support on Syrian soil instead of in host countries.
