Lebanon’s leaders held emergency consultations on Thursday as regional hostilities showed signs of escalation, pledging to keep communication channels open and to coordinate security measures aimed at insulating the country from potential fallout.

President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam spoke by phone with to review “the dangerous developments engulfing the region and their possible repercussions on Lebanon,” according to a statement released by the Grand Serail.

The two men agreed to “keep lines of communication open and work jointly to spare Lebanon the consequences of these events,” the statement said. Both underscored the need to place the national interest above political rivalries and to “maintain unity and national solidarity.”

In a separate move, Salam contacted Defense Minister Michel Menassa, Interior Minister Ahmad Al-Hajjar and Army Commander General Rodolphe Haykal. The calls focused on coordinating efforts and taking every necessary security measure to preserve internal stability and safeguard national security during this delicate period.
