Lebanese Government Allocates Funds to Recruit 1,500 Troops for Border Deployment

The Lebanese government has approved $1.3 million in emergency funding to recruit 1,500 new personnel for the Lebanese Army, showing the country's commitment to implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701 by bolstering military presence along the tense southern border once a ceasefire deal is reached.

Lebanon’s Minister of Information highlighted the political and international importance of the move, calling it a signal of Lebanon’s dedication to maintaining stability in the border region despite heightened tensions.

Minutes from the Council of Ministers’ meeting reveal that the $1.3 million is intended to cover recruitment costs through the end of 2024.

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati noted that 4,500 soldiers are currently deployed in the border area, with future plans to expand the force to between 7,000 and 11,000 soldiers in order to uphold Lebanon's obligations under international resolutions.
