An Israeli drone strike targeted a vehicle Tuesday on the Baawarta–Dahr Al-Damour road in the Aley District, located in the Mount Lebanon Governorate.
The strike reportedly targeted Hussein Izzat Atwi, a 1968-born academic and political figure from the town of Hebbariyeh, near Hasbaya–Marjayoun in southern Lebanon. Atwi was a professor at the Lebanese University and a prominent leader in al-Jama'a al-Islamiyya, an Islamist political group with historical ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene as flames engulfed the area, with Lebanese Army units arriving shortly after to assist in extinguishing the fire.
This is not the first time Atwi has been targeted. In January 2024, he survived a previous Israeli assassination attempt on the road near the southern Lebanese town of Kawkaba. He was later injured in a separate incident involving rocket fire from southern Lebanon toward Israel. Following that event, Atwi was detained by the Lebanese Army and transferred to the military hospital in Beirut, where he was treated for burns and remained for nearly a month.
