The Lebanese Army has begun its most extensive weapons collection campaign since the end of the country’s 15-year civil war, targeting Palestinian camps on both sides of the Litani River, Lebanese sources told Al Arabiya.
The sources said the move was coordinated with the Palestinian Authority and stressed that the state was determined to accelerate the operation as a clear signal of its resolve to bring all arms under its control.
The State insisted on pressing ahead quickly to reaffirm that it is committed to confining weapons to the hands of legitimate institutions, one source was cited as saying.
The initiative comes as Lebanon faces mounting pressure to demonstrate progress on sovereignty and security amid heightened regional tensions. According to the same sources, international coordination is already underway to mobilize support for the Lebanese Army, with efforts expected to intensify before the end of the year.
