The Kataeb’s Political Bureau, chaired by party leader Samy Gemayel, convened its weekly meeting to review the latest political and security developments and issued the following statement:
1- The Political Bureau considers the current handling of expatriate voting to be a direct affront to a vital segment of the Lebanese people. Lebanese citizens abroad constitute a pillar of the national economy through their remittances, their support for families at home, and their contribution to the country’s resilience on multiple levels.
To date, the Speaker of Parliament has failed to place on the legislative agenda either the draft law submitted by the government to amend the electoral law or the proposed law supported by a majority-backed parliamentary petition. This raises serious concerns about the proper functioning of constitutional institutions. Any unjustified delay in addressing this matter amounts to a direct obstruction of one of the core foundations of Lebanon’s democratic system.
The Political Bureau therefore calls for Parliament to convene without delay to debate the law in a manner that guarantees expatriates the right to vote for all 128 members of the legislature, fully preserving their constitutional right to participate in Lebanon’s democratic life, free from procrastination or selective application.
2- The Political Bureau welcomes the judicial agreement with Syria approved by the Council of Ministers regarding the transfer of convicted Syrian prisoners to their home country. At the same time, it calls for a comprehensive review of the Treaty of Brotherhood, Cooperation and Coordination, and for the abolition of the Lebanese-Syrian Higher Council. Relations between the two countries must be redefined within their natural framework as ties between two sovereign neighboring states based on equality, mutual respect, and proper diplomatic representation.
In this context, the Political Bureau commends Justice Minister Adel Nassar for his diligent efforts in bringing this issue to a positive resolution.
3- The Political Bureau views the Army Commander’s visit to Washington with satisfaction and urges the international community to continue supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces with equipment and resources. It emphasizes the urgent need to accelerate efforts to confine weapons north of the Litani River and to dismantle Hezbollah’s military and security apparatus. Doing so is essential to prevent recurring unrest in local communities, to protect the people of southern Lebanon, and to safeguard the integrity of the democratic process.
