The Kataeb Party’s Media Department has strongly condemned the assault on MTV channel’s news crew during their live coverage of the aftermath of the Israeli strike in Beirut’s southern suburb on Tuesday.
"MTV’s correspondent Nawal Berri and cameraman Dany Tanios were attacked while fulfilling their duty of conveying the truth and reality of what is happening across Lebanon without discrimination," read a statement issued by the media department.
"Assaulting journalists is an unacceptable act and a violation of the basic principles of dealing with free media in Lebanon," the statement stressed. "MTV has continually defended free speech, often at a significant cost to itself, and continues to practice this commitment daily."
The statement emphasized the sanctity of media freedom in Lebanon, noting that closing certain areas to the media excludes Lebanese citizens from vital information.
"The media is not to be held responsible for the events; rather, those who are recklessly pushing Lebanon to the brink are the ones to blame."
The party expressed full solidarity with MTV against all attempts of intimidation and suppression, affirming that media freedom has always been, and will continue to be, the cornerstone of Lebanese national life.
