Kataeb: Hezbollah Disarmament, Judicial Council Referral Must Not Be Subject to Political Posturing

The Kataeb’s Political Bureau held its weekly meeting, chaired by party leader Samy Gemayel, to discuss the latest developments. Following deliberations, it issued the following statement:

1. The Political Bureau reiterates the Kataeb Party’s call to refer the outlawed Hezbollah militia to the Judicial Council, in wake of the group’s acknowledgment that it transported explosives on Lebanese territory, as well as its actions that dragged Lebanon into a war that jeopardized national security, devastated Lebanese villages and displaced their residents

The Political Bureau commends Justice Minister Adel Nassar’s efforts on the matter, particularly his insistence on bringing it back before the Cabinet until the necessary decision is made.

It stresses that the Kataeb Party has consistently been at the forefront of efforts to end Hezbollah’s armed presence, dismantle its military and security apparatus, and hold it accountable for its actions. The party considers this a matter of national strategy that must not be reduced to political posturing or used as a bargaining chip. Past experience has shown that allowing Hezbollah’s military and security apparatus to operate outside State authority threatens Lebanon’s security, stability and national interests, as well as the safety and well-being of its people.

2. The Political Bureau underscores the importance of continuing the negotiations led by the Lebanese State, most recently marked by a meeting between military delegations in Tampa, Florida. It stresses that the process must lead to Hezbollah’s disarmament and an Israeli withdrawal from all Lebanese territory, paving the way for reconstruction and the return of displaced residents to their villages and communities.

These steps are essential to ending the suffering of the Lebanese people and restoring State authority across the entire country.

3. Amid the worsening social and economic conditions, global economic uncertainty and rising oil prices that are driving up costs across the board, the Political Bureau urges the government to declare an economic and social state of emergency.

It also calls for the formation of specialized task forces and working groups that would remain in continuous session to monitor developments and swiftly implement the necessary measures to prevent further social deterioration and mitigate its impact on the Lebanese people.
