Tourism Minister Laura Khazen Lahoud announced the temporary closure of the Jeita Grotto after a video went viral showing a pre-wedding celebration held inside the protected natural site, prompting concerns over possible damage to the site’s delicate natural formations.
In an interview with Voice of Lebanon radio, Lahoud said a committee of experts has been formed to assess any harm caused to the grotto’s structure. The committee includes representatives from the Lebanese Caving Club, which specializes in the preservation and study of the country’s cave systems.
The minister pledged that all resources of the Tourism Ministry would be mobilized to support the investigation “until the full truth is revealed,” in accordance with a decision issued by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
Lahoud vowed that the strictest legal and administrative measures would be taken against those found responsible for any violations, emphasizing that the move aims to protect one of Lebanon’s most important tourist sites and safeguard the rights of both the state and the Lebanese people.
She added that the ministry is expediting work on finalizing the official framework and terms of reference regulating the use of Lebanon’s tourist and archaeological landmarks, to prevent future incidents and ensure greater accountability in site management.
