Israeli Forces Shoot and Capture Off-Duty Lebanese Soldier Near Border

Israel has captured a Lebanese soldier after he was wounded during a sweeping operation in the southern border town of Kfarshouba, media reports said on Monday.

According to Al-Arabiya and Al-Hadath TV networks, the soldier, identified as Ziad Chebly, was off duty and dressed in civilian clothes when he was shot and detained by Israeli forces. He sustained gunshot wounds while riding his motorcycle on the Halta-Bastra road.

Chebly, a native of Kfarshouba, was reportedly taken into Israel, where he underwent surgery. His family was informed that he remains in Israeli custody as of Monday.

Later, the Army Command confirmed Chebly's capture, stating that investigations revealed Israeli troops had opened fire on him while he was in civilian clothing on the outskirts of Kfarshouba, wounding him before taking him across the border.

“This attack is part of a series of repeated and escalating aggressions by the Israeli enemy against Lebanese citizens,” the statement read.

The army also referenced another incident that occurred on the same day, in which Israeli forces allegedly shot and killed a Lebanese soldier in the town of Kfarkila – Marjayoun.

The statement condemned Israel’s continued “violations of Lebanon’s sovereignty and security,” warning that such actions contribute to rising tensions along the border.

Sources said contact with Chebly was lost midday Sunday while he was traveling from Halta in Hasbaya to the Bastra Farms area in the disputed Shebaa Farms region. He had been heading toward Kfarshouba to visit his in-laws when he was shot.

Following his disappearance, a patrol from the Lebanese Army and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) launched a search operation. Lebanese security sources stated that Chebly was shot in the foot by Israeli forces and taken captive near Bastra Farms.
