Israel Refuses Repeat of 2006 Lebanon War Outcome, Citing Unfulfilled UN Resolution 1701

Israeli officials have signaled that they will not tolerate a repeat of the aftermath of the 2006 Lebanon War, which led to the adoption of UN Resolution 1701 that, they argue, remains largely unfulfilled.

Sources speaking to Al-Hurra channel on Tuesday emphasized Israel’s position that the terms of the resolution, aimed at maintaining peace along the Israeli-Lebanese border, have not been fully implemented.

Resolution 1701 called for a cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, reinforcing the authority of the Lebanese government and establishing a buffer zone free of armed personnel, assets, and weaponry.

According to the sources, a central piece of evidence indicating the resolution's incomplete implementation is the presence of ammunition depots in southern Lebanon that Israel continues to target. These weapons caches, the sources said, signal Hezbollah’s ongoing military presence in areas that UN peacekeepers are mandated to monitor.
