An Israeli airstrike hit the upscale suburb of Hazmieh near Beirut on Monday, killing one person, while Israel said it had targeted a member of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
A powerful explosion rocked the Mar Takla neighborhood, where the strike hit an apartment in a residential building.
In a statement, the Israeli military said it had “struck a terrorist from the Quds Force in Beirut,” referring to the foreign operations arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Israel's Channel 14 reported that naval forces carried out the strike, targeting a Quds Force operative said to be heading an infrastructure network.
Sources cited by Al Hadath identified the target as Mohammed Ali Kourani, who had previously survived an assassination attempt weeks earlier. At the time, Israeli forces struck the Comfort Hotel, also located in Hazmieh, where he was staying, but he left minutes before the attack and escaped unharmed.
The strike took place in Hazmieh, an affluent area overlooking Beirut and located near the presidential palace. The district is home to diplomatic missions, government offices, and high-end residential buildings. A correspondent for Al Jadeed said the strike occurred just meters from the military academy, in what is considered a high-security zone.
Hazmieh Mayor Jean Asmar said the attack targeted a room inside an apartment rented by a displaced family, highlighting growing concerns over hosting people displaced by the war.
“What happened today is a sample of what can happen. The lease is under one person’s name, but the intended target is someone else,” Asmar told reporters at the scene.
He added that the municipality would be forced to take new measures regarding displaced residents “to ensure this kind of incident is not repeated.”
