U.S. mediator Amos Hochstein will visit Lebanon this weekend but his visit will not be decisive.
In light of the ongoing conversations with the Europeans and Israelis, Hochstein will update Michel Aoun, Nabih Berri, and Najib Mikati on the US vision for the solution and request clarification from the Lebanese, according to Al-Akhbar newspaper.
The U.S. mediator "will not carry a completed format or an agreement that is ready for signing," the newspaper reported, citing knowledgeable sources.
“Addressing deputy Speaker Elias Bou Saab, Hochstein stressed that the U.S. places the highest priority on striking a fair agreement and that he is seeking a fair solution that would please both parties,” the sources said.
It also added that Hochstein had sent reassuring messages that the US was serious about reaching an agreement.
¨American officials believe that Israel's declaration that extraction operations from Karish will be postponed will suffice to stop Hezbollah's threat to launch a warning strike against the enemy,¨Al’Akhbar said. ¨Americans are likely seeking to win more time.¨
“They are also looking again for a way out of a deal that will appease the adversary, despite claims that the problem will focus on the image rather than the essence,” the daily added.
Al-Akhbar was also informed by reliable sources that Hochstein had requested a meeting with a Lebanese presidential envoy or delegation two days prior, a request that was reportedly rebuffed by Lebanon.
Al-Anbaa newspaper meanwhile said that “according to the draft agreement that will be carried by Hochstein, Israel receives the entire Karish field in exchange for Lebanon retaining the entire Qana field with some modifications to Line 23, which could become a zigzag line in the section that overlaps the Israeli border as an Israeli condition due to the ruling coalition's disagreement with the Likud over this point and its use in electoral campaign bazaar..”
The camp of President Michel Aoun wants the agreement to be signed before his term expires on October 31, according to unnamed sources cited by Al-Anbaa.
