Hezbollah has signaled a major shift in its stance on disarmament, expressing readiness to hand over its heavy and strategic weapons in exchange for guarantees that it will not be targeted by Israel and that post-war reconstruction efforts will begin, sources familiar with the matter told Nidaa al-Watan.
According to the sources, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has recently taken an active role in resolving remaining obstacles, initiating direct contact with Hezbollah. The group is expected to deliver its official response shortly before the anticipated arrival of U.S. envoy Tom Barrack, who has reportedly submitted a proposal addressing the weapons issue.
Sources told Nidaa al-Watan that the Lebanese Army, once in possession of Hezbollah’s heavy weaponry, will immediately destroy it rather than store it. The weapons will reportedly be treated in the same manner as arms previously confiscated south of the Litani River.
Contrary to speculation, Hezbollah is not demanding political concessions in return for disarmament, such as command of the Lebanese Army or the creation of a Vice President post, the sources said. Instead, the group is seeking only security assurances and a commitment to begin reconstruction.
Despite a recent uptick in combative rhetoric from its leadership, Hezbollah has reportedly started preparing its base for the upcoming phase, which sources described as “decidedly political.”
