Hankach Says Parliament Standing Idle During War and Presidential Void

MP Elias Hankach emphasized the urgent need to elect a president, saying that the atmosphere is conducive for that, but "we must adhere to the constitution and call for an election session with utmost urgency."

"The continuation of this obstruction is lethal, and each delay exacerbates the hemorrhaging," he said in an interview on Voice of Lebanon radio station, outlining the precariousness of the current situation.

"The country needs to restore political life through the election of a president."

Hankach questioned the utility of dialogue among members of the same political team, arguing that true dialogue should occur between those with divergent viewpoints.

"Imposing any constitutional precedent as a fundamental passage for electing a president is unacceptable," he asserted.

"As opposition, we have formed a committee to consult with other MPs, engaging with more than a hundred MPs so far. However, the Shiite Amal-Hezbollah duo’s lawmakers have boycotted this initiative. Hence, it is strange that the duo calls us for dialogue while simultaneously eschewing consultations," he noted.

Hankach outlined the opposition's roadmap, which aims to amalgamate all initiatives that ensures adherence to the constitution and the application of the democratic process within Parliament.

"Is it conceivable that Parliament is not convened during a state of war and presidential vacuum? Is this the prudent management of the council?" he asked.
