MP Elias Hankach called on authorities to update cybersecurity legislation and bolster technical protections, warning that the country faces constant threats from hackers and cyberattacks.
“Technology always evolves faster than the law, and hackers often stay one step ahead,” Hankach said in an interview on Voice of Lebanon radio. “Frequently, the law is in one place and technical protection in another, but some laws compel institutions to implement cybersecurity measures to deter attacks.”
Hankach cited recent incidents, including hacking of ministry websites and attacks targeting Beirut’s airport, saying daily cyber threats should serve as a warning.
“This is a critical issue, not a secondary one. Cybercrime is a widespread plague in our society,” he warned.
The Kataeb lawmaker stressed that legislation can help set boundaries and ensure specialist staff are in place to mitigate attacks, but technical measures are equally necessary.
“Lebanon is constantly exposed to attacks. Laws help set boundaries, but we must also work on the technical side because this is an ongoing war,” he said.
Hankach called for new regulations to keep pace with technological developments.
“It is our responsibility to create a conscious environment in Lebanon on this issue. The important point is that we have talented professionals in this field providing services to major companies worldwide.”
Hankach also praised the government’s digital initiatives, praising the government's recent decision to establish a Ministry of Technology and Artificial Intelligence.
“We are moving toward electronic transformation and the digitalization of Lebanon’s economy to align with global standards,” he said.
