Gemayel: We Will Attend Tomorrow’s Meeting, Moving the Country to a New Stage Requires Opposition’s Unity

Kataeb leader Samy Gemayel on Wednesday confirmed that his party would take part in the election of the Republic's new president the following day and emphasized that negotiations with every bloc, without exception, had continued during the past 48 hours, since achieving this goal required the solidarity of the opposition.

“Along with the Lebanese Forces, Democratic Gathering, and National Moderation Blocs and independents, we are in constant communication with all of our friends and direct allies in the Parliamentary Assembly,” Gemayel said in an interview with MTV.

“Michel Mouawad is a friend and ally who possesses the necessary qualifications, and there are other very good names that we respect. We are attempting to get everyone together on one name, and it is crucial that we do so because the word must be united if we want to achieve a result,” he stressed.

“We believe that tomorrow is merely a temporary step. But it is crucial that we get back to the fundamentals, and the issue still stands: Do we really want to spend another similar six years or do we want to move on to a new phase?" Will we leave our country in its current state of decline or will we improve it?” he questioned.

The legislator believed that to move Lebanon to a new stage, the opposition needed to come together and Hezbollah needed to make a decision about whether it wanted to work with the rest of the Lebanese to find a solution or continue dealing in this manner and introduce Lebanon to its current state and worse.

“We are conversing with one another till the early hours of the morning to come to a compromise. Tomorrow is just the start, and we have one month to bring about change in the nation,” Gemayel concluded.
