Gemayel Slams Complaint Against Lebanese Ambassador to U.S.

Kataeb Party leader Samy Gemayel on Wednesday criticized the referral of a complaint against Lebanon’s ambassador to Washington, Nada Hamadeh Mouawad, to the Military Court, calling the move unacceptable.

“The decision to refer the complaint against Ambassador Nada Hamadeh Mouawad to the Military Court is unacceptable and sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the independence of diplomatic work,” Gemayel wrote on X.

“Lebanese diplomacy must not be subjected to political calculations,” he added, stressing that state institutions should be protected rather than intimidated.

The complaint stems from media reports that Mouawad had contacted Israeli Ambassador to Washington Yechiel Leiter to express sympathy after his son was injured in a vehicle-ramming incident in the occupied West Bank. Lawyer Hassan Adel Bazzi filed the complaint on Sept. 29, 2026.

On Oct. 13, Prosecutor General Ahmad Rami al-Hajj referred the complaint to Judge Claude Ghanem, the government commissioner to the Military Court, for review and any appropriate legal action.

Judicial sources told Lebanese media that the referral was a procedural step and did not mean Mouawad had been formally charged or summoned for questioning. Reports about the alleged contact have also been disputed.
