Gemayel Questions Acceptance of Initiatives Similar to Berri's

Kataeb leader Samy Gemayel noted that "nothing distinguishes the initiatives that were put forward from the initiative of Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri".

"MP Ali Hassan Khalil clarified yesterday that it is a dialogue process as previously called for by Berri," Gemayel said in an interview with Al Jadeed.

"Firstly, we did not see any commitment from the other side to hold open sessions, not just consecutive ones, and secondly: the March 8 candidate, Sleiman Frangieh, did not withdraw from the presidential race, so we are still at square one today. I am surprised how some agreed to an initiative that did not address these structural points amid Hezbollah's refusal to discuss a third candidate."

"The problem of not having a president today does not only affect the positions of Christians and appointments but ends the state entirely and cancels all possibilities of revival, the chance of forming a new government, and the possibility of approving reforms for economic recovery and everything that can be implemented to save the country," he added.

"The solution lies in our opinion in a clear position from Hezbollah accepting another candidate and agreeing to consensus with the rest of the Lebanese," Gemayel emphasized.

He considered that all other initiatives that might be proposed would be a waste of time.

Gemayel believed that the process of imposing a President on the Lebanese by force was practically a coup by Hezbollah against the Constitution by disabling the democratic process.

He affirmed that this step will be met with confrontation by all available means.
