Kataeb Leader Samy Gemayel noted that his party has never relied on anyone and its position has been known since the beginning of sovereignty battles 50 years ago.
“Hezbollah has been carrying out a systematic and escalating process of control since 2005, moving from one stage to another. This process began with its call for dialogue and reconciliation after March 14 and then. After 2006 Lebanon War, it began controlling the institutions and closing the parliament,” Gemayel said Wednesday during a televised interview on the LBCI channel
“Hezbollah moved to the stage of country's control when it posed the question of " its candidate or no president," and we remained without a president for two and a half years until everyone submitted to its conditions. After 2016, Hezbollah moved to a new stage, which was replacing Ghazi Kanaan with Hassan Nasrallah, becoming the one who chooses the president, forms the government, and takes the judicial decisions. It wants to impose its presidential candidate Sleiman Frangieh by force and will disrupt sessions until his election. This is not called democracy,” he noted.
“They are waiting for us to surrender, and this will not happen. We are sticking to our positions and will not compromise on the future of our country and our interests. We will not give in, but we are waiting for acceptance of partnership, or else they will bear the responsibility for the divorce,” he stressed.
Gemayel confirmed that Saudi Arabia does not want to intervene in Lebanon's internal affairs.
"The French have realized that their proposal could not work," he said.
“If Hezbollah continues to impose its will on the Lebanese people, then a civil war could break out. However, if it decides to open a new page, then avoiding violence and moving towards a new phase will be possible,” he said.
The Kataeb Leader considered that the danger in the battle was that they are dedicating Hezbollah's reference to determining the fate of the country.
“If we submit to Hezbollah’s will, we will extend 6 years of control over the country. Do we want to live in the logic of "warrior" and killing, or do we want to live peace?” he asked.
"If they do not withdraw Sleiman Frangieh 's name then we will not go to the parliament and will prevent the holding of the session," he pointed out.
Regarding the candidacy of army chief General Joseph Aoun, Gemayel said that if Aoun wanted to run for president, he would have "to address political issues and share his ideas and directions."
“We are in the midst of confrontation and we do not put forward names or have an implicit candidate. We are working with the opposition, independents, reformists, and socialists to reach a unified name. For me, until now, it is MP Michel Mouawad,” he said.
“When we will announce a name for the presidency, I prefer that we announce it all together. We agreed in the last meeting with the opposition parties not to announce a name unless we are all together, and I hope everyone will adhere to that,” he went on saying.
He said that the Free Patriotic Movement Head Gebran Bassil must take additional steps and realize the danger of Hezbollah's grip on the country's decisions.
“The Free Patriotic Movement's DNA is sovereign and militant. This party is well aware that there is control over the country,” he stated.
As for the possibility of meeting Bassil, Gemayel said, "Everything is possible if we reach a point where we find that we are capable of achieving a result through politics."
The Kataeb Leader also talked about the relationship with the Lebanese Forces, indicating that the coordination is ongoing between the two parties.
“If things remain as they are, I might hold meeting with its leader Samir Geagea,” he declared.
When asked about the Syrian refugees file, Gemayel said: “There is a scientific way to deal with this issue, which is to determine the legal status of the person. If he is able to return to his country and does not want to, then he is an economic migrant.”
“There are also persecuted people that we must protect, but there are those who have threatened Lebanon with stopping the entry of dollars and euros,” he added.
As for the municipal elections file, Gemayel said: "We are trying to maintain constitutional entitlements," stressing that postponing the elections is unjustifiable as there are no valid reasons.
