Ahead of casting his vote in Lebanon’s municipal elections, Kataeb Party leader Samy Gemayel stressed that elections should not be seen as celebratory events but rather as an essential and regular component of the democratic process.
"We cannot celebrate every time we achieve an electoral milestone, as it is a normal process," Gemayel said. "What matters is that the new presidency and government restore this normalcy and ensure it is carried out properly, so we can return to a healthy democratic life, like in all other countries."
Upon arriving at the polling station in Bikfaya, Gemayel spoke with reporters, emphasizing that his party’s parliamentary bloc had proposed a proportional electoral law, but it had not been passed. He pointed out that closed electoral lists do not offer solutions to Lebanon's political challenges and stressed that the ongoing debate over electoral reforms continues.
Gemayel also highlighted the undemocratic practices and mismanagement that had previously plagued local municipalities, noting how certain individuals had operated without adhering to democratic principles. However, he reaffirmed that efforts are underway to restore genuine democracy in several villages.
"Today, we are working to restore democracy in some of the villages," he stated.
Addressing political alliances across the country, Gemayel explained the different dynamics in smaller versus larger municipalities. He explained that while family influence tends to dominate in smaller towns, politics holds more weight in the larger cities.
On the issue of the presidency of the Metn Union of Municipalities, Gemayel pointed out that the union has been absent for 35 years and underscored the urgent need for change at this level.
Responding to comments made by former Lebanese Minister Elias Murr, who claimed that the majority of municipalities in the Metn region had already aligned with him, Gemayel took issue with the assertion.
"He has a lot of courage to make such a claim, especially since everyone has access to the figures. Times have changed," he remarked, signaling a shift in the political landscape.
