Kataeb leader Samy Gemayel on Tuesday held the President and the Prime Minister-designate responsible for Lebanon’s security breakdown as none of them take the initiative to form a government that would be able to support people’ needs, deeming the failure to form a government in the worst challenging situation the country is experiencing as a premeditated crime committed against the Lebanese.
“The Prime Minister-designate must prepare a proposal unveiling the names of the ministers to be included in the new government. The President and the designated Prime Minister sign the decree for the formation of government. Within 30 days, the newly formed government has to present its general statement of policy to the Parliament to gain its confidencee. Deputies are constitutionally unable to recover the government formation. The ball is in the court of the President and the Prime Minister-designate now,” Gemayel said after meeting with United Nations Coordinator to Lebanon Joanna Wronecka.
The Kataeb leader voiced his sadness over Hamra event's recurrence, saying that such event will be repeated more and more in the next stage.
“What happened in Hamra today was a proof of officials' indifference towards Lebanese’ sufferings,” he said.
Earlier today, an armed man demanding deposits frozen by his bank took an unspecified number of hostages at the Federal Bank of Lebanon branch in the Hamra neighborhood in west Beirut.
“After the elections and from the first day, we, as the Kataeb party called for swift government formation even if its term is limited to 2 or 3 months. Today every month is equivalent to one year. Unfortunately, the President and the Prime minister-designate have not discussed the formation until now,” he pointed out.
“The country might be left without a judiciary, administration and executive authority at a time the Lebanese are dying of hunger due to failure to form a government,” he added.
“We repeat for the thousandth time that Lebanon cannot withstand absence of government or leadership that supports people who are unable to enter hospitals, pay the bill that is issued in fresh dollars. How will the students enter schools and who will pay the fees? What will parents, teachers and schools do?” he asked.
“We seek a government that supports Lebanese’ needs and takes necessary measures to save the country. Lebanon cannot withstand this situation for a period of three months," he concluded.
The meeting was attended by Kataeb leader Advisor Ghassan Abou Jaoudeh, the party’s International Affairs Coordinator Marwan Abdallah as well as the party’s Foreign Affairs Head Dr. Michel Abi Abdallah.
