Gemayel Calls for United Front to Curb Hezbollah's Dominance

Kataeb leader Samy Gemayel described the vacuum taking over the country as “frightening”, noting that it cannot be filled with conventional opposition work.

“Instead, we must all strive to create a strong sovereign force capable of sitting at the table of discussions to address all matters concerning Lebanon's fate,” Gemayel said earlier this week during a meeting with members of the “Journalists For Freedom” association in Bickfaya.

"In this country, there is on one side a party that controls decision-making, and on the other, there are political forces that come together as an opposition. There is nothing else in between. There is no government, no state, no institutions, as they are all under Hezbollah's control."

“There is only one party [that is dominating] and a government that executes its wishes. This one party is Hezbollah,” Gemayel said. “Given the prevailing vacuum and the dominance over State decisions, we, as political forces committed to Lebanon's sovereignty, must unite from all spectrums to form a broad, inclusive front that transcends leadership disputes.”

This front, Gemayel added, should produce a strong political force that would speak up whenever needed, and make its voice heard across Lebanon and beyond.

When asked why this front has not been established yet, Gemayel refrains from delving into many details, reiterating that Kataeb Party has been one of those striving for this goal and will continue to do so without making any preconditions regarding the structure of the front.

Gemayel stressed that what matters the most is for all the sovereign parties to meet halfway away from trivial issues that have no place in such a critical phase.

“By forming this front, we can prevail,” he affirmed.
