Gemayel Asserts Lebanon Hostage to Hezbollah, State Absent from Decision-Making

Kataeb Leader Samy Gemayel affirmed that Lebanon is held hostage, and decisions are in the hands of one party, which is Hezbollah, with no presence of the state.

"In a normal country, US envoy Amos Hochstein should have met the Foreign Minister, but the Lebanese state and government are both subject to Hezbollah. It is natural for diplomatic delegations to meet the party that holds the decision-making power," Gemayel said in an interview with LBCI.

Gemayel emphasized that caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati "is an ally of Hezbollah," stating that the March 8 Alliance's forces appointed him to head the government.

"Therefore, the Prime Minister is part of the control exerted over the country, and Mikati can do more than he is currently doing in the South Lebanon file, as he is the Prime Minister of Lebanon," he stated.

The Kataeb Leader noted that Hezbollah contradicts itself when it claims to have opened a front in support of Gaza and Hamas and later asserts that it is defending Lebanon and the Lebanese people.

"Hezbollah will claim victory regardless of the outcome. However, our sovereign stance remains unchanged, regardless of the war's outcome. We aspire to a future where our children can thrive in this country. We won't allow the current equation to persist," Gemayel affirmed.

"The problem is that Hezbollah portrays itself as defending Lebanon's Shia Muslims, but in reality, it defends Iran. Therefore, I say that I am ready to defend the Shia Muslims more than they are, and I want to reconsider the entire existing equation and implement a significant set of reforms," he stressed.

"The first front that will be opened if Iran's security is threatened is the Lebanese front. Hezbollah is a branch of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, not an ally of Iran," he stated.

"Iran is the one who funds Hezbollah, transforming it into a regional army. Our role as opposition is to form a united front to confront it," he indicated.

"We created a 'resilience front' against Hezbollah by preventing the 'elimination' of the Lebanese army through the extension of the army commander's term; it was also unable to impose its presidential candidate," the Kataeb Leader affirmed.

"We warn against an international green light in exchange for Israel's security, granting Iran legitimacy in Lebanon and control over the country and its institutions," he emphasized.

The Kataeb Leader stressed that as long as Hezbollah's illegal weapons exist, "the system will remain paralyzed, and there is no possibility of affecting the current political system or engaging via a dialogue table."

"Have we not learned in Lebanon that no one can prevail over another internally?" he asked.

Regarding the Kataeb Party's relationship with the Free Patriotic Movement, he highlighted that they were "in the same trench," adding: "Our only demand from the movement is for it to return to its historical path before 2006, and we want it to be in a 'correct' political side."

He indicated that the Quintet committee advocated for the implementation of the constitution, with a president who unites the country, strengthens institutions, and must be given the opportunity to restore Lebanon's well-being.

He said that the moment Hezbollah accepts the principle of consensus on an "acceptable candidate for everyone, we will be able to vote for a president within 48 hours."

"Hezbollah will not attend a presidential election session without knowing its outcome, and it insists on imposing its candidate. What's aggravating is that Hezbollah's willing to disrupt the country to impose its will," he noted.

"Everyone, including Berri, Mikati, and Hezbollah, is violating the constitution to the detriment of the people. Refusing to attend presidential election sessions is just one aspect of this constitutional violation," Gemayel added.

"We should file lawsuits against anyone who obstructs the election of president and against all those who violate the constitution," he asserted.

"If Hezbollah comes today and says it withdrew Sleiman Frangieh's candidacy, we are ready to head to the parliament for discussion or dialogue. My issue with Frangieh is that he operates under the logic of Hezbollah," Gemayel concluded.
